Surabaya, November 26, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) supports the study-based development of Indonesia’s mineral resources at the 17th Annual Convention of the Indonesian Society of Economic Geology (MGEI). STM not only serves as one of the event sponsors, but also includes representatives of its team as participants, moderators, and presenters. This year’s convention carries the theme “Sustainable Resilience of Indonesia’s Mineral Resources: The Role of MGEI and Its Contribution in Technology, Research, and Professionalism.”
MGEI is a professional organization consisting of economic geology practitioners, both domestic and international. Economic geology itself is understood as the study of earth resources utilized for economic and industrial purposes. MGEI operates under its parent organization, the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI), which has more than 10,000 members, 7 sub-organizations, and 26 regional boards. Each year, MGEI holds a convention as a strategic forum for geologists, industry players, and government to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration.
The 17th Annual MGEI Convention presented 10 discussion sessions with more than 30 research presentations. In addition, there was an exhibition joined by dozens of companies providing services and equipments in the geology sector. Dozens of students from various universities in Indonesia also actively participated, especially through the Student Research Poster Contest (SRPC). Last year, the SRPC was won by STM Achievement Scholarship recipient, Darmansyah, who is studying Geological Engineering at Universitas AKPRIND Indonesia.

In this year’s convention, STM Principal Geologist Nurhadi Wibowo had the opportunity to be a panel speaker in the discussion themed “Mineral for Future Resilience Mining.” He delivered a presentation titled “What We Learn from Onto: Geochemical Architecture and Exploration Vectors in a Porphyry–High-Sulfidation Cu–Au System.” Part of his presentation explained the characteristics and mineral zoning of the Onto Deposit, exploration challenges, and how the team addressed them.
Nurhadi Wibowo appeared alongside Eddy Da Costa (PT Gorontalo Sejahtera Mining Indonesia), Andy Yahya Al Hakim (Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology/FTTM ITB), Karina Aerielle (PT Antam Tbk), and was moderated by Gayuh Putranto (Mining One). The discussion was interactive with questions from participants, including those directed to Nurhadi Wibowo—showing enthusiasm for the material presented.
Nurhadi Wibowo stated that through this forum, STM contributes to enriching insights into the development of mineral resources in Indonesia. “We present experiences from what we have done in the Hu’u Project. This scientific event is a valuable opportunity for us to learn from each other, add references for innovation and technology in the economic geology sector,” he said. In addition to being a presenter, he was also entrusted as a mentor in MGEI’s professional development program and as a judge in this year’s SRPC.
Meanwhile, another STM Principal Geologist, Paulo Renata, took the role of moderator in the panel discussion themed “Exploring Energy Transition Metals.” Paulo’s presence was not only based on his relevant experience, but also demonstrated STM’s active participation in energy transition development. Through the Hu’u Project, a copper exploration project in Dompu Regency, STM continues to make efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s position as one of the main players in the global energy transition.
MGEI Chair Rosalyn Wullandhary stated that studies and research, particularly related to critical minerals, are very important and require cross-sector collaboration. Therefore, MGEI organizes this annual convention along with other strategic programs. Some of these include research funding and scholarships in collaboration with sponsors, professional internship programs, and student research competitions.
Rosalyn also appreciated STM, which has long been involved in MGEI programs, including this year’s convention that directly involved two of its senior geologists. “Hopefully in the future there will also be new talents to share knowledge, provide space and time for the younger generation to understand what porphyry is, what gold and copper are, and the latest technologies that have been applied, which are not obtained from university lessons,” she said.
As a form of appreciation, the organizers of the 17th Annual MGEI Convention presented a plaque of recognition to STM for its contribution to the success of the event. The award was handed over by MGEI Advisory Board member Sukmandaru Prihatmoko to STM Senior Business Analyst–Mineral Exploration, Desi Lusianingtyas. Desi is also a Central Board Member of MGEI who has worked for more than eleven years in developing this professional organization.

About PT Sumbawa Timur Mining
PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) is a joint venture company between PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (20%) and Eastern Star Resources Pty Ltd (80%). STM manages the Hu’u Project, a copper exploration project operating under a 7th Generation Contract of Work (CoW) located in Hu’u Subdistrict, Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.
The CoW area also contains geothermal resources. To explore this potential, STM established its affiliate company, PT Sumbawa Timur Geothermal, which has received a Geothermal License (IPB) from the government. STM continues its journey toward realizing its vision of becoming a world-class copper mining operation powered by renewable energy.
