Dompu, April 30, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company managing the Hu’u Project, supports the Dompu Regency Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province in preventing youth violence and creating safe spaces in schools through student seminars and teacher workshops. The week-long series of activities was held at three schools, involving around 600 students and 115 teachers.
Youth violence not only disrupts the learning process but also has the potential to damage students’ social and emotional development. The escalation of youth violence cases may also lead to material losses and even fatalities. Contributing factors include difficulties in emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and building healthy peer relationships.
In response to this situation, STM held student seminars and teacher workshops at SMPN 1 Hu’u, SMAN 1 Hu’u, and SMKN 1 Hu’u as an educational and preventive effort to foster a safe, inclusive, and violence-free school environment. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Kanaka Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission includes improving access to and the quality of education.
The student seminar was themed “No Drama, No Fights: Cool Ways to Handle Conflict.” The expected outcomes of this interactive seminar include students identifying conflict triggers and how to avoid them, mastering emotional regulation techniques, enhancing empathy, and committing to maintaining a safe school environment.

Meanwhile, the teacher workshop carried the theme “Creating Safe Spaces in Schools.” The aim of the activity was to equip teachers with the ability to identify early signs of violence and carry out appropriate interventions, strengthen relationships with students to foster safe environments, implement de-escalation strategies, and develop school-based violence prevention action plans.
The series of events was led by Kanaka Foundation facilitator Yudo H.B. Timtim, and supported by STM’s Community Development team. The methods used in both the student seminar and teacher workshop included interactive discussions and case studies, mindfulness and relaxation exercises, conflict resolution simulations, and the development of follow-up action plans. Importantly, the sessions also included a declaration of anti-violence commitment from participants.
STM Community Development team member Vovia Witni stated that the role of parents and educators is crucial in supporting students’ growth. “We see the need for character development among the younger generation, particularly children—how they can recognize their own emotions to avoid becoming bullies either at school or in the community,” she said.
Witni added that STM continues to identify educational needs in Dompu Regency, aligning with government educational plans. To date, STM has carried out various education support programs from early childhood education (PAUD) to higher education, including technical and non-technical training, scholarships, and support for teaching and learning facilities.

The seminar and workshop were warmly welcomed by participants. Ummul Khairat, S.Pd., a teacher at SMPN 1 Hu’u, said that the workshop facilitated by STM helped her better understand her students. “This is a basic need for us as teachers—to understand the psychology of our students. Our grasp of psychology is still limited, especially since, as human beings, we can be emotionally affected by our environment,” she expressed.
Drs. H. Rifaid, M.Pd., Head of the Dompu Regency Office of Education, Youth, and Sports (Dikpora), acknowledged that violence in schools can be influenced by problems outside of school. According to him, the student seminar and teacher workshop facilitated by STM are expected to serve as a teaching model to create violence-free schools, which can also be applied in other schools across Dompu Regency.
“The presence of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining has greatly supported us in preparing teachers in Hu’u Subdistrict and surrounding areas to develop best practices that can be shared with other teachers throughout Dompu Regency,” said Rifaid.
